I’ve owned two Mach Es and loved them both. My work situation has changed (no longer commuting daily) so I would only be keeping it as a toy (I also have an F150).

One factor that pushed me over the edge is the ridiculous registration costs in Michigan. $507 for annual tags. EV penalties piling up.

Wish you all the best. Enjoy the ride!

At least the additional $267 you pay to register an EV in Michigan is equal to the gasoline tax that an average driver would pay (25 MPG vehicle going 12,000 miles per year). That being said, I wish they would just switch everyone (ICE & EV) over to a per mile tax. I would pay more than I do now, since I drive a lot of miles... but fair is fair.

Take care, and best of luck with whatever career changes you're going through!

I was part of a two year long study in Hawaii about doing exactly that. They tracked my miles and driving routes during that that time frame. They subtracted my private road driving (2 miles each time I leave the subdivision). The end result was that EVs would see an overall registration fee hike mostly due to the absurdly low EV fee, but most non commercial vehicles would see a reduction. The big losers? Commercial trucks. So guess why it was never adopted?

How much of the $507 was specifically due to the vehicle being an EV vs. just higher registration costs for any vehicle registration?

Thanks, Rick. Guess I saw that and it didn't register. It's an unfair amount, especially when compared to ICE vehicles, which is something we should all be talking to our elected officials about, however, EVs are still far cheaper to own and operate, even with an exorbitant extra fee. That fee is about 3 tankfuls at today's gas prices for his F150.

To be clear, if you are commuting 40 miles a day like I used to, I still think EV is the way to go. Now that I would only be driving it a couple thousand miles a year it doesn’t make sense for me anymore.

I know of multiple people that let their registrations lapse for YEARS and never pay the ridiculous fees that some states charge. The ticket is about $90 in IL and is considered a non moving violation. Not saying that is "right" but i see the logic....
A few years ago when the secretary of state stopped sending out postcards for reminders with your access codes to buy it on line, THOUSANDS of people never remembered to update their registration, myself included. I drove over 2 years on "expired" plates and never knew it...

The taxing of everything is getting out of hand. I know this is off topic for this forum, but I had a visceral reaction when I saw the $507 fee.

yep. I know the feeling. If I know I am selling or trading in a car in the near future, I don't renew the plates. I will take my chances for a few months...lol. Number of times it has bit me in the ass....ZERO.

I paid roughly the same for my old 3 liter Diesel some years ago. EVs over here are free of any Tax for 10 years after registration.

That’s a pretty steep annual registration fee in Michigan for your Mach E. Sorry to hear that tipped the scales to sell. I’m in New York State and with an 8% sales tax and state income tax, certainly not a low cost state to be in to save taxes but our 2 year Mach E registration fee at $107.50 without any added EV fees seems like a relative bargain. We also still have a $2,000 Drive Clean incentive for new purchases that was applied when I purchased last October. I also pay taxes on the electricity I use to charge my Mach E. That’s electricity we would not use be using otherwise in our house. Why can’t the federal road tax contribution be paid by those taxes? Better yet, put everyone on a per mile federal tax road tax structure so you pay based on how much you use the roads and vehicle weight no matter what type of energy source you are using. This also take efficiency out of the equation for taxing purposes One other comment, isn’t there a proposal to suspend the gasoline federal road tax on the table? To make that fair, does it also include suspending the extra electric car fees or is this just a another petroleum industry perk?

In California, if you don't pay the registration fee, and get popped for an expired registration, you have to pay a fine, plus the delinquent registration, plus any late fees. At a certain point, they can tow your car. And then the fees can really start adding up.
